Yesterday was the Student Showcase at Symphony Space (in the Upper West side...AKA my new neighbourhood!) It went really well! We had a 4.30pm show and an 8pm show. Was Really happy with how it went, I was singing side stage into a mic for "Telephone Hour" as I was unable to dance on my ankle:( but it looked great from what I could see! Then we did "Because" which was good at the 4.30pm show and really off key in the 8pm show. It is sung Acapella which sounds great (when you start in the correct key and on the right notes) but it was definitely a learning curve! Then I sang in "I've Seen All good people" which sounded really good and was lots of fun.... all in all it was a fun day/night! I had my 2 friends there watching, but it was weird not having any family there, I'm so used to seeing my sister at my shows, or someone else that I have begged to come watch me perform hahaha.
After the show a bunch of us went out, and I said Goodbye to my Aussie friend Nikki who is working on a cruise-ship for the next 3 weeks...Thank God she's coming back!
So Today went down like this:
8am Woke up due to the heat of my room (feels like I'm in an oven most mornings until I open the window)
8.15am I opened a window and went back to bed
10am Get up and have breakkie
The usual berries, banana and yoghurt...still delicious!
10.30am contact Libby about the apartment...still no word.
(potter around the house for a few hours, you tubing, face-booking, e-mailing, looking for volunteer opportunities)
2pm Vocal Technique class with Bettina Sheppard (45 minutes of technique and 15 minutes working on a jazz piece "It's Only A Paper Moon" (my voice felt so warmed up and strong after this tech class!)
I asked Bettina if I could purchase her technique book and CD (she will bring me a copy tomorrow)
I also organized for myself, Michael, Marina and Pasqualino to work at a soup kitchen next Monday morning from 9.30am-1pm...should be an experience. I'm excited to do it!
Tonight I went to say Goodbye to an Aussie friend from BDC, she leaves on Wednesday...EVERYONE IS LEAVING ME!!!!
The end of this week I will have said Goodbye to so many of my gorgeous new friends:( But I know I will see them again...someday!
Tomorrow I have my first coaching lesson with a Musical Director/accompanist to expand my repertoire book for audiotions etc. I'm excited to see what he has in store for me. I am really at a point now where I don't know which direction to go in...Should I just stick with Musical Theater and focus solely on Broadway shows? Or do I dig into Jazz and possibly start doing gigs, Or go the complete opposite direction into Old school 70s/80s Rock? I was talking to Bettina the other day and she said...You don't always choose your career...sometimes it chooses you. You just have to be ready and open to it!
And that's it...I DO want to be ready for whatever may lay ahead of me...Hopefully it won't be pulling beers or waiting tables...been there, done that!
It's time I started packing...
